It’s time to get out on the streets and celebrate another news-filled week all distilled into one fine hour of community radio on Open Sources Guelph. For the third week in a row, we address the growing crisis for that country swimming in so much debt there’s no good options for them. The debt tour will continue to our own backyard where there’s absolutely no guarantee that there will be a return on the substantial investment into an event that’s not the Olympics, but close enough. Dead fraudsters and the self-defeating act of having a referendum to raise taxes is also on the docket as your summer vacation takes a kinds of serious turn. Continue reading

Open Sources Show Notes for Thursday April 23, 2015

In October 2014, Cam Guthrie was given a promotion by the voters of Guelph from Ward 4 city councillor to mayor. His campaign message of limited tax increases and fiscal transparency resonated with people, and as a result he was handed a decisive victory over incumbent mayor Karen Farbridge. But winning an election in one thing, being the city’s chief representative, advocate and ambassador is another bailiwick entirely. Now, just over six months since his election win, Mayor Cam Guthrie will join Open Sources Guelph for an hour of frank (and hopefully fun) discussion about his last 100 some-odd days on the job, and the challenges facing him and Guelph’s city council for the next few years. No, Mayor Guthrie had to get right down to work, and work with the new council, to put together a budget for 2015. No easy feat even if everyone on council has experience parsing those huge budget books, and no easy task when you’ve made a lot of promises about changing the way business is done at 1 Carden Street.

But with the budget battles behind him now, Cam Guthrie will now face an even more dangerous situation: one hour on live radio alone with Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson. Continue reading

Open Sources Show Notes for Thursday February 19, 2015

opensources

This week’s episode of Open Sources Guelph will feature a mixed bag of issues from startling acts of violence, to the future federal election, to the demise of a would-be media giant. It’s a tricky balance discussing the incredibly sad news of people being killed to the still sad, but kind of schadenfreude-y, conversation about the passing of Sun News, but to parapharase a great news anchor, that’s the kind of week it’s been. From Copenhagen, to Halifax, to right here on our own backyard, the Royal City, it’s been another busy seven days in the news. Continue reading
