This week on Open Sources Guelph, the news – and the summer weather – is hotter than a match head! Perhaps you heard that we are now fighting a trade war, and everybody seems to think that this will work out to their favour. In any event, we will feel the impacts locally where there’s an election coming up in a couple of months and we will talk about that too. And to wrap up, how are things going in the resistance benches now with wizards and superheroes?

This Means Trade War. Shortly after last week’s show went to air, the trade negotiations took a tick to the left and became a full-blown trade war. Prime Minister Mark Carney says he threw in the towel after too many last minute additions to undermine our sovereignty, and then people on both side of the border started having totally normal reactions. (See: Trump, Donald and Ford, Doug.) We will talk about the latest developments and the things the mainstream news is missing.
Vote Local. The nominations for elections in Ontario’s 445 municipalities closed last Friday, and the board is set for important local races this October. Guelph has 49 people either running for mayor or council, and we will talk about some of those prospects, but we will also look at some of the other compelling stories from around Ontario from re-matches in Waterloo and Toronto, to the new mayor versus old mayor showdown in Mississauga, and more!
The State of the Resistance. Last weekend, Spider-Man took part in a counter protest against another racist rally hosted by a January 6 defendant. Last week, a dozen Gandalfs showed up outside Peter Thiel’s new digs in Argentina. And this weekend, dozens of communities across Ontario will take part in another monthly Fight Ford protest. There’s a lot of protesting, but is it any of it having an effect, and what can protestors do better in order to activate community power?
