We’re winding down a very busy first year here at Open Sources Guelph with a visit from an old friend, and discussion about two very important topics that have been at top of mind for many Canadians over the last 12 months. Continue reading “Open Sources Show Notes for Thursday December 17, 2015”
A Bridge Too Near
I’ve always loved the electric atmosphere generated at a contentious City Hall meeting, no matter the issue. Due to other more pressing duties in my life, I can’t commit massive chunks of time to the civic beat these days but I did pop in last week for long enough to hear the engineering department’s dissertation regarding the upgrade of the one lane bridge on Niska Road. A seven hour juggernaut is a high endurance test but to their credit, plenty of people stuck it out for the duration. The only time I have spoken on the record at City Hall was in defence of the environment, regarding the lack of respect shown toward it by a well known slumlord in town. I’ve never become one of The Usual Suspects in the crowd though, those same people that show up with a sheaf of notes and make identical arguments time and…

Gift from God? Why Are You Trying to Republicanize Us, Kenney?
The left-leaning news site Press Progress has been breaking all kinds of stories, and this latest one is more than a little disturbing if you like your church and your state held separately. Jason Kenney, widely considered by many to be the frontrunner for the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada, told a group of evangelicals near the end of the recent Federal campaign that our Charter rights come from God, and not the, you know, human beings of the government that passed them. Open Sources Show Notes for Thursday December 10, 2015
One more week till Star Wars, two more weeks till Christmas, but Open Sources Guelph still has a lot to say before the year’s end. Canada got back to business as the holiday season ramped up, so how does the new government look as compared to the old? Meanwhile in Guelph, city council had passing the second budget of the term top of mind, but there was also that small matter of a one-lane bridge… Then we will catch up with a major criminal investigation in California, which will segue nicely into what might by the five most dreaded letters of 2016, T-R-U-M-P. VIDEO – Darth Trump, Dark Lord of the $#!%
“I’m more militaristic than anyone in this room.” Not something you’d typically expect Darth Vader to say, even though it is basically true. However, if that voice coming out of the black mask and breathing regulator belongs to Donald Trump, then that and other bits like “I really good at war. I love war to a certain way, but only when we win,” take the beloved sci-fi villain to all new levels of hilarity. We desperately need a good laugh about Donald Trump, he’s taking the U.S. Presidential race to increasingly higher levels of absurdity and negativity in equal measure, so why not make him the stereotypical villain we’re all starting to see him as? Steve, Admit It, You’re Just Not that Into Parliament Anymore
Dear Stephen Harper,
Long time listener; first time caller.
First, let me commend you for nearly 10 years as Prime Minister of Canada. You were right, it’s not an easy job, and while we didn’t always agree, I nevertheless admire someone – anyone – that stands for public office. You become fair game for personal attack no matter what you do, justified and unjustified, and not to put too fine a point on it, there were a lot of people there at the end rooting for you to fail. Still, you persevered. You created the Canada you wanted, got a consensus to follow, and that’s never easy. Ya did good, kid!
Having said that, it’s okay if you don’t want to hang out on Parliament Hill anymore, and honestly, it really seems like you don’t want to. Continue reading “Steve, Admit It, You’re Just Not that Into Parliament Anymore”
The Complete Text of the Speech from the Throne
At about the length of a high school essay and only 15 minutes long in the reading, the first Speech from the Throne of the government under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was short, sweet, and to the point. Now, if you like, you can read the whole thing for yourself here. Continue reading “The Complete Text of the Speech from the Throne”
