April is shaping up to be the cruelest month for Prime Minister Stephen Harper: the Mike Duffy trial begins this week, the knives are already out for the federal budget coming April 21, and author Michael Harris will be hitting the road to talk about his takedown of the Harper years, Party of One. Fair Vote Guelph is bringing Harris to the Royal City on April 19, but Open Sources Guelph will have the reporter, columnist and author on the show later this week. Joe Oliver Finally Announces Budget Date for April 21

After weeks of badgering from the Opposition, Finance Minister Joe Oliver finally set a date to announce the next federal budget. On April 21, Canadians will learn what exactly the Harper government has in store in their final financial statement before this fall’s election, and how exactly the incumbent Conservatives plan on balancing the budget as well as delivering the new spending they’ve announced in the midst of an economic downturn. Open Sources No-Show Notes for Thursday April 2, 2015

Do to circumstances beyond our control, Open Sources Guelph will not be broadcasting on Thursday April 2 at 5 pm. CFRU will instead be broadcasting a special musical performance live to air from the University of Guelph Bullring. Don’t worry. This ain’t over.

Although Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson have the week off, they are continuing to plan future shows and future coverage, including some very big shows for April including an interview with Party of One author Michael Harris, an Earth Day special with former Green Party candidate Mike Nagy and special guests, and our hour-long conversation with Guelph Mayor Cam Guthrie.

The news late last year that Wildrose Party leader Danielle Smith was leading eight of her fellow Alberta Members of the Legislative Assembly across the floor to the governing Progressive Conservative Party was a shocking development. Smith and the Wildrose had truly shaken the real politick of the presumption of ongoing PC rule, but instead, Smith led her rebellion, and now, it seems, she’s led herself to political ruin. It was a little over six months ago that Cam Guthrie was elected to be Mayor of the City of Guelph, but those first four months on the job haven’t been all getting settled, hand-shaking and memorizing the names of city hall staff. No, Mayor Guthrie had to get right down to work, and work with the new council, to put together a budget for 2015. No easy feat even if everyone on council has experience parsing those huge budget books, and no easy task when you’ve made a lot of promises about changing the way business is done at 1 Carden Street.

It seems like everyone’s getting ready for an election this week on Open Sources Guelph. Here in Canada, the Federal government is doubling down on the war with ISIS while making security the primary issue in the upcoming election. Meanwhile, south of the border, a firebrand junior senator is the first to make his play to succeed Barack Obama as President of the United States. Ted Cruz First to Officially Launch 2016 Presidential Bid

Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) became the first candidate to officially enter the 2016 U.S. Presidential race today, announcing his candidacy in a speech at Liberty University. The Canadian-born Cruz, long a Tea Party darling and a paragon for ultra-conservative politics in the United States, launched his bid to be America’s 45th President before an audience at the Christian school founded by Jerry Falwell.
