Open Sources Show Notes for Thursday March 19, 2015

halifax-2-final

It’s dire news on this week’s Open Sources Guelph, as it seems that fear is in a position to win again both here and abroad, and meanwhile, our concerns about things we should be deeply concerned about seem to go by with a minimum of media fuss. From cultural clashing to environmental apocalypse, to whether or not we’re too worried about being worried, it looks like another packed week for our little radio show. Obama Takes “Mean Tweets” With Good Humour

obama_kimmel

A U.S. President gets no shortage of criticism, but the new era of social media makes a lot of that criticism immediate, unsolicited, and uncensored. Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live though, Barack Obama decided that turnabout is fair play by taking part in the semi-regular Kimmel bit “Mean Tweets” where the subject of the mean tweets reads them on air. At least the President has a sense of humour about it all. Continue reading “Obama Takes “Mean Tweets” With Good Humour”

It seems all we ever hear about these days is the scary world of Islamic extremists ready to watch the world burn, starting with Canada. Terrorism and concerns about terrorism have filled the news since Open Sources Guelph was last on the air a week ago, and the line between informing the public and scaring the public is getting progressively more blurry. It seems like everyday now there’s some news item about violent extremism either here or abroad, and that last couple of days have been no exception. As the government releases the video made by the Parliament Hill shooter before the fateful day, the RCMP confronts the limits of managing its share of the War on Terror, while the politics of Bill C-51 seem to have affected its creator in an unlikely way. In this week’s edition of Open Sources Guelph, we’ll be covering a wide-range of topics, as per usual. What happens when an Israeli politician talks to the U.S. Congress without permission from the White House? What happens when the government says the internet’s for everyone? What happens when everyone agrees there’s a problem and are no closer to a solution? And what happens when almost no one wants to host the world? Those are some of the questions, and we will attempt to find some answers. Continue reading “Open Sources Show Notes for Thursday March 5, 2015”

A Tale of Two Mayors (in Comedies)

22_Minutes_2009

Last night on The Hour Has 22 Minutes, correspondent Mark Critch came to Toronto to catch up with Mayor John Tory and indulge a pleasant day of tobogganing. (Tobogganing not being banned in Toronto as it is in other Ontario municipalities, I refer you to the previous discussion we had about it on the show.) While the entire affair was funny and enjoyable, it did get me thinking (remembering really) of the last time 22 Minutes came to Toronto to talk to the Mayor….
