The end is nigh. Whether that’s the end of this terrible election cycle or the end of the world, that’s entirely up to how the American electorate will cast its vote on Tuesday, but one thing’s for certain: Open Sources Guelph will be going live to air to cover the whole darn thing. When you tune in your radio to 93.3 FM – or tune in your web browser to cfru.ca – on Tuesday at 8 pm, the CFRU election team will bring you all the blow-by-blows from Bangor to Sacramento, from Anchorage to Orlando, and all points in between as we wait and see if America makes history by electing its first female president or makes history by decided to end it all in star-spangled, Cheeto-dust-covered glory! The Weekender: The Year Insanity Trumped History

Seeing the election unfold south of the border, it’s hard to believe that you can be surprised anymore, but by spending one evening on Twitter last week, I found out that I still could be. Someone had tweeted that they had voted that day, and they were moved to tears because for the first time in their lifetime, they cast a vote for a major party nominee for president who happened to be female. That emotional honesty shared on social media put something in stark relief for me: we’ve been so obsessed with how this election has broken all conventions we haven’t taken the time to notice history being made right in front of us. Open Sources Show Notes for Thursday November 3, 2016

This is almost over, folks. Not Open Sources Guelph, of course! The show will go on for the forceable future, but when it comes to our first topic of the week, it will, mercifully, be almost over. We’ll look at the last days of the 2016 presidential election, which had at least one last good twist for the final week of campaigning. We’ll also catch up with all the latest from Guelph City Hall as things have been heated lately and look to get even more heated over the next several weeks. From there, we’ll consider the federal scene and whether our government is acting inappropriately in raising political funds, and then it’s off to North Dakota where there’s no end in sight for the protests there. The Weekender: Transit Cuts Are Coming. I Guarantee It.

If you pay attention to the goings on at Guelph City Hall, it would not come as any great surprise that a high level position’s been vacated this week, but the part that was surprising was just how quickly and quietly it was done. Two paragraphs, buried on the city website with no notice sent out to the media, revealed that Transit Manager Phil Meagher had been terminated “without cause” after over three years at the helm of Guelph’s bus fleet. Subsequent reporting revealed that Meagher’s departure also meant the end to the possible implementation of the Transit Growth Strategy that he had helped shepherd for the last two years. On Wednesday, Donald Trump took a break from the campaign trail to open his new hotel in Washington D.C., so if the Republican nominee for President doesn’t care about the election this week, then why should Open Sources Guelph? Instead, we’ll focus on other concerns, like why Justin Trudeau might not be a man of his word on electoral reform. We’ll also talk about another First Nations protest against another energy project closer to home, whether or not this European trade deal will go through in spite of one little place in Belgium, and if Ezra Levant is good enough to be recognized by the U.N. as a journalist running a journalistic organization. This week on Open Sources Guelph, good news! After waiting and hoping that things might heat up for the Conservative leadership race, we have several more people to consider after a week of moves and announcements. In more good news, it seems like one of the world’s biggest employers has gotten the message: investing in people pays, and meanwhile in North Dakota, press freedom scored some kind of victory because a judge decided there wasn’t enough evidence to jail a reporter for doing her job. And finally, a grumpy old man decided if he can’t win the house, he’ll burn it down and salt the earth. Three out of four ain’t bad.
