It’s dire news on this week’s Open Sources Guelph, as it seems that fear is in a position to win again both here and abroad, and meanwhile, our concerns about things we should be deeply concerned about seem to go by with a minimum of media fuss. From cultural clashing to environmental apocalypse, to whether or not we’re too worried about being worried, it looks like another packed week for our little radio show. It seems all we ever hear about these days is the scary world of Islamic extremists ready to watch the world burn, starting with Canada. Terrorism and concerns about terrorism have filled the news since Open Sources Guelph was last on the air a week ago, and the line between informing the public and scaring the public is getting progressively more blurry. In the meantime, government corruption moves back to the front burner as the sins of senate are further recounted, while the Ontario government looks to dig its way out of its scandals by selling off shares of Hydro One. In this week’s edition of Open Sources Guelph, we’ll be covering a wide-range of topics, as per usual. What happens when an Israeli politician talks to the U.S. Congress without permission from the White House? What happens when the government says the internet’s for everyone? What happens when everyone agrees there’s a problem and are no closer to a solution? And what happens when almost no one wants to host the world? Those are some of the questions, and we will attempt to find some answers. Continue reading “Open Sources Show Notes for Thursday March 5, 2015”

Terror. Now that we have your attention, it’s time to talk about this week’s Open Sources Guelph. After being made afraid of going to the mall and digging holes, we’ll talk to someone afraid of four more years of Harper. Then, after the break, we’ll be afraid for our friends in the First Nation community with another scary development, and then we’ll see if we should be afraid of talking about S-E-X in front of the C-H-I-L-D-R-E-N. In other words: be afraid, be very afraid. Continue reading “Open Sources Show Notes for Thursday February 26, 2015”

This week’s episode of Open Sources Guelph will feature a mixed bag of issues from startling acts of violence, to the future federal election, to the demise of a would-be media giant. It’s a tricky balance discussing the incredibly sad news of people being killed to the still sad, but kind of schadenfreude-y, conversation about the passing of Sun News, but to parapharase a great news anchor, that’s the kind of week it’s been. From Copenhagen, to Halifax, to right here on our own backyard, the Royal City, it’s been another busy seven days in the news. In another very busy news week, the issues run the gambit from the superfluous to the super serious. The Supreme Court opened up the rights of Canadians further in what might be its most contentious decision since it upheld the rights of same sex couple to marry. From there the discussion turns to political betrayal, media betrayal and the latest from a forgotten war zone. Just another week on Open Sources Guelph.
